Always Match Your Links and Buttons with Your Landing Pages

When a user clicks on a CTA (Call to Action), they are entering into a “micro-contract” with your website. The text on that CTA is making a promise for what comes next. And the linked landing page must fulfill that promise!

To match your links and buttons to your landing pages is critical. When a user clicks a button, CTA (Call to Action), or a link, they are essentially entering into a “micro-contract” with your website. The text on that button, whether it’s a direct “Buy Now” or an intriguing “Discover Why XYZ”, sets a specific expectation, a promise, for what comes next. And the linked landing page must fulfill that promise!

The landing page is the fulfillment of that contract. If the content doesn’t immediately align with the link’s promise, users experience cognitive dissonance; they feel misled or confused, which spikes your bounce rate and effectively severs the customer journey. To maintain trust and momentum, the transition must be seamless, ensuring the “scent” of the information follows through from the initial click to the final destination.

Why “Message Match” Matters

These are the reasons why matching your links and buttons with your landing pages is critical:

  • Reduces Friction: Users don’t have to hunt for the information they were promised.
  • Builds Authority: Consistent messaging signals that your brand is reliable and organized.
  • Optimizes Conversion: Keeping the user in the “flow” significantly increases the likelihood they will complete your desired action.
