ChatGPT vs Googe: The Tragedy of the Commons

The growing popularity of ChatGPT stems from its rootless, free access to the web for training. This process is not sustainable. Over time, ChatGPT will start to take away visitors and revenue from Google. As users switch from Google Search to ChatGPT or future competitors, they will leave the search engine environment, preferring the complete, well-structured answers provided by Generative Artificial Intelligence. Without visitors coming to their websites and consuming their content, content creators’ motivation to continue producing high-quality content will gradually fade, until it becomes unsustainable to keep creating good content.

The entire SEO ecosystem is going to go through a complete evolution. It is too early to predict what the new ecosystem will look like. At this moment, we can only say that the current SEO environment days are numbered.
